/Tongue interlock safety switches
Tongue interlock safety switches are used for the safe position monitoring of sliding, hinged, and removable machine guards where a mechanically actuated and tamper‑resistant safety solution is required. Operation is based on a mechanical actuator tongue that engages with the switch body, ensuring that hazardous machine motion is prevented when the guard is open.
Our product range includes IDEM Safety tongue interlock switches with positively operated safety contacts in accordance with IEC 60947‑5‑1. The switches are available in plastic, die‑cast metal, and 316 stainless steel housings, with a wide selection of actuator and contact configurations to suit different applications. Rotatable switch heads and multiple actuator entry options simplify installation and allow flexible mounting on various guard designs.
Tongue interlock safety switches can be connected to safety relays or safety controllers and can achieve up to PLe / Category 4 or SIL 3 functional safety levels depending on the system architecture. IP67‑ and IP69K‑rated stainless steel versions are particularly suitable for food, pharmaceutical, and process industry applications, including washdown environments. These solutions are widely used in packaging machinery, robotic cells, conveyor systems, and automated production lines where reliable, standards‑compliant machine safety is essential.
